Original oil on canvas by Andrew Gault

Andrew Gault RIBA is an architect and Rower. He paints the local Irish and Scottish landscapes capturing the interplay between water, land and weather and conveying the vast forms and structures of these places around our coasts and along our rivers. Andrew’s work was exhibited in the Royal Society of Ulster Architects, Architects as Artists exhibition 2016 where his landscape ‘Headland 3’ (oil on canvas 17” x 17”) received the President’s Choice Award. His paintings are in private collections in N. Ireland, England, Scotland and Australia.

“No longer is your bloody crop of sons required to heave and lift.
They grew strong in the rich soil,.
where the myth of their fathers pushed
hard in the muddy salient and now lie cold
alone in that rich dark earth”. - AndrewJGault

Who planted these great veteran beech trees? They are not native so who decided to line this little road. When they were planted there was no electricity, no radio, no penicillin, no atomic power, no vaccination.
I walk past them, under them and imagine the people who planted them as I walk on the mast.
