Own Art is a national initiative that makes buying contemporary art and craft affordable by providing interest-free credit for the purchase of original work. 

The initiative reduces the financial barriers and perceptions of elitism that commonly exist within the art market, by making it easier and more affordable for people to purchase and enjoy original art and craft, regardless of their income and socio-economic background.

Since 2004, the scheme has enabled more than 83,000 customers to get access to the art they love. Delivered through a network of over 300 galleries across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, Own Art has so far supported over £75 million of sales of contemporary art and craft to UK customers.

How Does Own Art work?

Own Art is a national initiative that offers interest-free loans to help spread the cost of buying contemporary art. You can purchase artwork valued between £100 and £25,000, and pay it back in 10 monthly instalments at 0% interest. Multiple pieces — and even framing — can be included in the same loan. For purchases above £25,000, you can simply pay a deposit and use Own Art as part-payment.

Applying is Simple

Once you’ve found the perfect piece, let us know you’d like to use Own Art to finance your purchase. Applications take around 10 minutes and can be completed in person at Canvas Southside or online. You’ll just need proof of residence and signature (such as a driving licence). Decisions are made instantly, and once approved, you can take your new artwork home straight away or arrange collection/delivery.

Your payments will then be collected monthly by Novuna (Own Art’s finance partner), beginning about a month after your purchase.

Who Can Apply?

Own Art is available to all UK residents over 18 (subject to status). To apply, you’ll need to meet one of the following criteria:

• Working at least 16 hours a week (employed or self-employed)
• A retired person in receipt of a pension
• A person in receipt of disability allowance

If not, you can still apply using your partner’s income details (with their agreement).
