In this painting we see the familiar motifs that appear in King’s work. The numerous layers of paint are beaten and scrubbed, the marks and scratches that appear are due to process rather than intention. The lines, suggesting poems, music scores, the gold dots referencing many things but in this case include water glistening and also starlight as King sees a great connection between the body of water and the heavenly bodies. The upper layers of the paint are very translucent especially the three lighter swathes suggesting movement. King says, ‘Water is different at night, and so are we … perhaps this painting can remind us of the deep and reflective parts of ourselves that busy lives can leave us with little time to contemplate ‘.
