Neil Gillespie

Neil Gillespie is a self-taught painter whose work explores tensions between perfection and imperfection, balance and imbalance. His compositions draw on botanical and sculptural forms, combining intuitive mark-making with structured composition.

Working across paper and panel, Gillespie blends crude materials like crayon and emulsion with acrylic and oil stick, emphasising experimentation, process, and surface. Influenced by Art Brut and Modernism, as well as artists William Scott, Sean Scully, and Barbara Hepworth, his work investigates relationships between form and balance.

He has exhibited across Ireland and the UK, including group shows at Outset Gallery Galway, The Alchemy Experiment Glasgow, Arcade Studios Belfast, The Engine Room Belfast and the Royal Ulster Academy Exhibition at the Ulster Museum. In 2024, he presented his debut solo exhibition, Notions, at LATE, Belfast.
