Dermot Smyth

Dermot Smyth is an Irish contemporary landscape artist with a long standing interest in the rural landscape. His paintings are not landscapes in the traditional sense, but focus on buildings that are so common place that they have become invisible.

Dermot paints the landscape through these buildings, expressing their heroic nature, battling to maintain their core purpose of providing shelter against the ravages of time and the elements.

Whilst his paintings could be described as landscapes, they are composed as portraits, with the building front and centre. This imbues a sense of identity. The surrounding landscape and sky is not a faithful depiction, but created to provide a strong emotional narrative for the viewer.

Dermot uses oil on canvas, which he applies intuitively using a palette knife.

Dermot has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Royal Scottish Academy Summer Exhibition, the Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Exhibition, the Royal Society of British Artists Annual Exhibition, and Visual Arts Scotland Centenary Exhibition. His paintings are held in private collections across the UK and Ireland.
