Where do we go from here?
Usually I start with an idea in my head based on a landscape painting rather than any actual landscape. I was trying to create an idyllic, isolated edenic space where the land ends but which is fertile with rich soil and temperate climate having abundant plants and trees and evidence of sun-worship and assorted rituals.
This does not explain how the painting turned out, nor is it a key to any possible meaning the viewer who spends time looking at it may experience.
Influences here include: painters Caspar David Friedrich, Munch, Rousseau, ‘The Woman in Black’, the films ‘Forbidden Planet’ and ‘Annihilation’.
It’s mostly acrylic on gesso panel with some gold leaf & posca paint marker. The collages are sourced from nature books, garden/rose books, collectible/jewellery/antique catalogues, vintage ornithology prints.
I often find it difficult to title paintings without pretentiousness , so I like to use a quote or title from a song or film.
