I wanted to paint an owl in a landscape with a setting sun, set it in a sheltered copse by a coastal path, to create an eerie encounter.
Taking the owl from an image in a book on paintings from natural history I sought to place it among foliage, trees, bushes and undergrowth which I found in the same book, or in memories of old renaissance, botanical illustration & folk-art sources.
It’s painted in acrylic and flashe (a vinyl-based paint) and ink on wood prepared with gesso.
