Hugh Clawson

Hugh Clawson was born in Belfast in 1959 and worked as an upholsterer for 18 years. Throughout this time he maintained an interest in painting until 1979 when he decided to make it more than a hobby by becoming a full time artist. Like many renowned artists, Hugh is self-taught and works with all mediums including bronze sculpting. In 2001 Hugh was commissioned to model a bronze sculpture on Robin Island, New York, the holding place of Nelson Mandela. However, Hugh is best known for his three-dimensional painting. Hugh’s first one-man exhibition took place in Belfast’s ‘John Hewitt’ pub in 2003. From that time his works have been accepted into ‘Ionta’s Small Works Show’ and more recently in the annual ‘RUA Exhibition’.
